Mrs. Margarette Claxton Chavis, age 82, of Hazlehurst, died Saturday, January 19, 2019 at her residence. Mrs. Chavis was born May 12, 1936 in Toombs County to the late James Elry (Jack) Claxton and the late Janie McNair Claxton. She was a retired Executive Secretary with Hamlet & Rockingham Housing in North Carolina. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and is preceded in death by her grandson, Damon J. Jarrell II and siblings, Melba C. Boutwell, Carolyn Claxton and Lafiecie Claxton. Survivors include two daughters, Daryl C. Smith of Hazlehurst and Doana C. Dixon of Hazlehurst; son, Garrison R. Chavis II (Georgia) of Rockingham N.C.; sister, Dorothy C. Hill of Hazlehurst; brother, Colon Claxton of Hazlehurst; seven grandchildren, nineteen great-grands, eight great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survived. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00-8:00pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 2:00pm at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Deek Dubberly officiating. Interment will follow in the Hazlehurst City Cemetery. Mrs. Chavis will lie in state one hour prior to service.
