Mr. Paul Howard Joyce, age 87, of Lumber City, GA, formerly of Hawthorne, FL, died Sunday, December 25, 2016 at the Meadows Regional Hospital in Vidalia, GA. Mr. Joyce was born on February 18, 1929, in Lyons, GA to the late Cohen Joyce and the late Marie Pittman. He attended school in Lumber City GA, Diesel Engine School is Missouri, served in the Navy, Air Force and World War II. In 1950 he married Maggie Christine Lewis. Together they had three children, Paul Howard Joyce Jr., Richard Wayne Joyce and Julie Christine Herman. In 1970 foster son, William Edward Smallwood joined the family. In 1955 the family moved from Jacksonville to Gainesville, FL before moving to Hawthorne, FL in 1957 where they remained until 2000. During their time in Hawthorne, they travelled back and forth to their river property in Lumber City, GA, making it their permanent home in 2000. Mr. Joyce's work history includes employment with a River Boat Company travelling up and down the Mississippi River, Blue Plate, Alachua County Sheriff's Office, Palatka Auto Auction, Paragon Auto, Hawthorne Hardware, and raising cattle. Mr. Joyce was a past member of Hawthorne United Methodist Church and was a member of Lumber City Methodist Church. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and what he was famous for, shooting the breeze. Mr. Joyce is preceded in death by his son, Paul Howard Joyce Jr., wife of 66 years Maggie Christine Joyce, siblings Michael Joyce, Marguerite Hosler and Nelda Patterson. Survivors include Son and Daughter-in-Law, Richard Wayne and Linda Kay Joyce; Daughter Julie Christine Herman; Foster Son and Daughter-in-Law, William Edward and Elsie Smallwood.; Grandchildren Keisha Christine , Amanda Dawn Joyce, Laura Conoly Bugg, Melissa Conoly O'Brien and Sarah Conoly Allen; Great Grandchildren Charlotte Bugg, Brady Bugg, Mikey O'Brien and Mac O'Brien; Brother and Sister-In-Law William and Mary Wheat A Memorial and Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Lumber City. Visitation from 10:30 - 11:00 and service following with Rev. Glen Hancock officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Lumber City. In lieu of flowers, contributions, in his memory, can be made to the Lumber City United Methodist Church in Lumber City, GA.
