Obituary

Raleigh E. Spell, age 86, of Hazlehurst died Monday, June 3, 2013 in the Jeff Davis Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Spell was born on October 3, 1926 in Jeff Davis County to the late Gaines Erastus Spell & the late Mattie Hand Spell. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the Hazlehurst Church of God where he served as a Sunday school teacher, on the Church Council, the building committee, and in other various capacities. He was a former superintendent at Hazlehurst Mills before becoming the Co-owner of Spell's Exterminating Company. He served the City of Hazlehurst for 34 years as a City Councilman & as Mayor Pro-Tem and was also a retired farmer and a former member of the Jeff Davis Exchange Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Jean Adams Spell; sister, Myrtle Herrington; and brother, Loyal Spell. Survivors include his son & daughter-in-law, Jeffery & Lynn Spell; daughter, Amanda Spell; grandchildren, Candace Hyatt, Jennifer (Kevin) Shepherd, Jonathan (Melissa) Spell, Dr. Jason (Katrina) Harrison, & Meghan Parker; great grandchildren, Carson Riley Shepherd, Cameron Kevin Shepherd, Sarah Ashley Hyatt, Jeffery Grant Hyatt, & Jacob Raleigh Spell; sisters, Louise Ryles, Jewel White, Corene (George) Grosse, & Eunice Johnson; brothers, L. W. (Mary) Spell & Donnie Spell; and many nieces & nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday evening, 5-8 pm, at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 6th at 11:00 am at the Hazlehurst Church of God with Rev. Harold Jones, Rev. Tommy Daniels, & Rev. Justin McLellan officiating. Interment will follow in Palms Memorial Gardens. Funeral services are under the direction of Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.
