Mr. Roy L. Simmons, age 77, of Hazlehurst, died Thursday, May 04, 2017 at Jeff Davis Hospital. Mr. Simmons was born March 12, 1940 in Jeff Davis County to the late Chester Simmons and the late Maxine Yawn Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a member of the National Guard, and was an educator with the Jeff Davis County Board of Education, serving as a Teacher, Principal, and School Superintendent. After retirement he was employed with the Georgia State Prison System. He was a member of Towns Bluff Park, the Historical Society Museum, retired Teachers Association, Veterans Association, and friends of the Library. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hazlehurst. Survivors include his wife, Linda Page Simmons of Hazlehurst; Daughters and Son-in-Laws, Page and Carey Smith of Savannah and Laurie and Shellie Lewis of Brunswick; two grandchildren, Joshua Herrin and Jacob Lewis. Visitation will be held Saturday evening from 6:00-8:00pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, May 07, 2017 at 3:00pm at First Baptist Church of Hazlehurst with Rev. Brad Waters officiating. Interment will follow in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family may be contacted at the residence.
