Sylvia Earnestine Barge began her journey on October 10, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan as the daughter of the late Harold Daniel Evans, Sr., and Nellie Cornish Evans. Her brother Harold, Jr. predeceased her. After moving to Hazlehurst, Georgia she attended the St. Matthews Church School which was under the principalship of Miss Mary Viola Cornish, her beloved aunt. Under her tutelage and that of her other maternal aunt, Miss Rowena Cornish, she developed a life-long love of learning and helping others. Also, at this time, she joined St. Matthews A.M.E. Church. Later she transferred to and graduated from Hazlehurst Elementary and High School. She received a B.S. from Fort Valley State College, and while there, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. After earning a M.Ed. from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, AL, and a Specialist from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, she served as a Family and Consumer Science (home economics) teacher and Vocational Educational Director in Jeff Davis County, retiring after 41 years. Mrs. Barge loved teaching! Her classroom was a place where students eagerly gathered, where practical knowledge was transformed into delicious dishes, fashionable outfits, and caring childcare skills, and where leaders earned and utilized their fledging wings. She was a trusted confidante for many students and for those in need a provider who sought no public praise. Upon retirement, Mrs. Barge continued to serve the residents of Jeff Davis County by working as Concerted Services County Coordinator. Sylvia met and married Roscoe C. Barge who also preceded her in death. She was an exceptional wife, but even more amazing mother to their two children, Denise and Derrick. During her lifetime she has served on various county boards and committees in Jeff Davis County, always in an effort to better her community. Likewise, her expertise was revered on many national and state boards to improve Consumer Science in public schools. Former students adored her; colleagues respected her; and the public placed their trust in her. She never hesitated to help others and will always be remembered as selfless and kind. Her legacy: "If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain...
