Avin Lewis Obituary

Mr. Avin Lewis, age 83, of Hazlehurst, died Sunday, September 19, 2021 at his residence.

Mr. Lewis was born May 20, 1938 in  Jeff Davis County.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Bitha Hand Lewis. Sisters and Brother-in- Laws: Doris Sayer (Robert), Janice Caves (Buddy). Beloved Uncle and Aunt:  L.A. and Mildred Hand.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dora Jean Pickren Lewis of Hazlehurst; Daughters, Tammy Herndon (Drew) and Kim Tucker (Brad); Son, Carl Lewis.

Grandchildren; Shae Lewis, Donovan tucker, Lindsay Bowden (Parker), Anslee Tucker, Emilee Tucker.  Great-Grandchild: Cora Lee Bowden. Sister in laws: Carrie Walker, Bess Tuten, Marian O’Conner, Maxine Pickren, Ruby Pickren.  Several nieces and nephews.

Avin retired as Beaming Superintendent at Hazlehurst Mills after 38 years, but he worked in many departments during his career including Knitting, Wrap Station, FLW, Data Entry and Burling. Growing up, Avin worked on his family farm and those roots ran deep. As an adult, his love of farming continued: even after a long day at the Mill, he would head home and ride his tractor to relax until dark, growing corn and soybeans, and loving every minute.

He embraced life and savored all of the small moments that escape many.  From meeting friends at the Huddle House for coffee, cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs, golfing, and riding motorcycles  to always enjoying cake and ice cream on special occasions , he relished pleasures with his friends and family.

Avin attended Elizabeth Baptist Church and was known to read his Bible and Billy Graham devotional daily.  His love and commitment to his wife and his family knew no bounds; he considered it an honor to be a husband and father.  Just two weeks before his death, Avin asked Brother Keith, pastor of his church, to conduct a wedding vow renewal with he and Dora.  Avin’s three children and five grandchildren were the absolute apples of his eye and he was so excited to meet his great-grandchild, delighting in watching her smile and wave.
