Hilda Lowery Lindsey was born in Macon, Georgia on October 31, 1926. From that day forward, everyone that ever met her said she was certainly a sweet Georgia Peach with her smile, kind words, positive attitude and Southern drawl.
Hilda was born to Vasco A. Lowery, Sr. and Minton Rawlins Lowery as the second oldest of eight children that included four brothers and three sisters. When her oldest brother, Thomas, was killed in World War II at the age of 19, Hilda helped around the house raising her brothers and sisters. After attending high school and college, she began working in a record store in Macon, Georgia. It was there that a young blonde record salesman came in to sell records but left knowing he had just met his future wife. Hilda and Bob Lindsey married seven months later. They had a fun and loving marriage that ended much too soon with his passing in 1969.
As a single mom, she raised her only son, Bobby, always being mom and teaching him how to be a strong, but loving man to everyone he met. Hilda had various jobs in her life to make sure her son was able to attend and graduate from college (Auburn University). She often said seeing her only son leave for a job in Texas was one of the hardest things she had experienced. But Texas is where Bobby met and married Starla, whose children Kyle and Devon were the focus and loves of her life. In 1990, Hilda moved to Texas to be close to her family and lived there until her passing on
May 8, 2024.
In Texas, Hilda soon became known as Baba to her family and friends. It was a nickname given to her by her grandson at an early age and it stuck for 34 years to all that knew her.
Despite her trials in life, Hilda never lost faith in God and made sure she passed that faith on to her family. She believed in angels and often talked about seeing them watch over her family during the most difficult times. Her apartment was filled with angel figurines and she would often give a small crystal angel to someone in need of their watchful care.
Hilda’s last known entry into the Lowery Family History and Cookbook was in 2008:
“GUESS IN 81 YEARS I HAD A GOOD LIFE – Much I don’t understand WHY –
However, Bobby and I did survive, he is doing well.
AREN’T GRANDCHILDREN WONDERFUL??”
Thanks to God for giving her an extra 16 years to be a part of our lives and see her grandchildren
grow into successful young adults with her guidance and support. We will love you always, Mom, Baba, Hilda.
