Obituary

Ms. Joann Hughes McNeal, age 64, of Hazlehurst, died Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the Lumber City Nursing Home under the care of Regency Southern Care Hospice.

Ms. McNeal was born October 06 1958 in Jeff Davis County.

She is preceded in death by her parents Joseph Onis Hughes and Vera Mae Sellers Hughes, her Husband, Julius McNeal, brothers, Carlton Hughes, and Edward Hughes, sister, Essie Mae McNeal, and brother-in-law, Snooky Thornton.

Joann was a sweet, gentle and kind soul, she enjoyed rocking on her front porch.

She loved fishing, watching TV, listening to gospel music, and going to church.

She was a faithful member of the Hazlehurst Church of God and always had a smile and a hug for all. She truly will be missed by her family and her church family.

Survivors include her sisters, Gail Thornton of Hazlehurst and Belinda Carter (Larry) of Hazlehurst; brother, Fulton Hughes of Glenwood; sister-in-law, Edna Hughes of Hazlehurst; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation and Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 05, 2023 at the Hazlehurst Church of Goad, visitation will begin at 10:00am and the funeral service will follow at 11:00 am with Rev. John Nunes officiating.

Interment will follow in the Satilla Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joann’s Sunday School Class along with all friends and family in attendance will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Chris Hughes, Clay Haynes, Colby Hughes, Tyler Hughes, Tommy Hughes, Kaleb Carter and Jonah Wilson will serve as active pallbearers.

The family may be contacted at Belinda and Larry Carter’s residence, 792 Satilla Church Road, Hazlehurst.

The McNeal Family and Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home respectfully ask all in attendance to continue to follow social distancing guidelines set by our local health district and the CDC.
