Linda Bohannon Barnes, 85, of St Simons Island, Georgia passed away in Lumber City, Georgia, on July 16, 2025, after an extended illness. A woman of faith, she anticipated eternal life with her God and welcomed her salvation from this world after 2 years of physical suffering and pain.
A modest and humble woman, Linda displayed a remarkable determination and work ethic. As a young child, she picked cotton to pay for school supplies for herself and her younger siblings. She began her first job at the age of 11, working summers in a Miami dime store. In school, she was bright and athletically gifted, excelling on the basketball court.
After high school, Linda worked in civil service at Robins Air Force Base and later married Feddie Barnes, and reared her two children. When her children entered high school, she pursued her college education and earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, graduating summa cum laude and first in her class.
Linda's dedication and hard work did not wane after her retirement from the Department of Defense as an Air Force accountant. At 70, she purchased her childhood dream home and renovated it with her husband and son. During the COVID lockdown, she single-handedly built a brick patio for her home, hauling bricks and pouring 60-pound bags of concrete by hand at the age of 81. Prior to falling ill, she maintained nearly five acres of yard and two large family cemetery plots, and multiple properties. She relished the reunions, walks, and bike rides with her cherished sisters and cousins, reflecting the deep bonds she shared with them.
As the family matriarch, Linda was wise, gifted, and practical, relied upon for advice by all who knew her. Her strength, determination, and strong faith inspired her family and friends, leaving a lasting legacy of love and resilience. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
Linda is preceded in death by parents John and Dorothy Bohannon, and her brother Rodney Bohannon. She was widowed by Feddie E. Barnes and Cerbert Brue.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Barnes McConnell of Spartanburg, and her son, John Barnes of Telfair County. Linda also leaves behind her cherished grandson, Bram McConnell of Spartanburg, her devoted caregiver Randy Hesters, and her beloved dog, Babydoll. She is survived by her dear brother Carl Bohannon, and three loving sisters Mary Potts (Ted), Brenda Miers (Jim, Sr.), and Jeannie Enzian. Linda was a loving aunt to nieces Rhonda Denison, Susan Davis, Jessica Miers, and to nephews Ronald Bohannon (Marcie), Jim Miers, Jr., Ernest Sapp, and Jesse Sapp, as well as her grandnieces and grandnephews. She is also survived by her stepsons and stepdaughters from her marriage to Cerbert Brue who cherished her during their time together.
A brief commitment service and celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, family asks that you honor her with compassion towards others, the sharing your childhood and family tales with family and friends, or by taking a drive in the Telfair County countryside she loved all her 31,815 days on this earth.
