Merleen Hamm Shumans, age 94, of Hazlehurst died Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Community Hospice in Vidalia. She was born September 30, 1928, in Baxley.
Per her wishes, Rev. Jeffery Spell will officiate a private family and friends graveside service at Graham United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Shumans was a long-serving member of the church family. Later in life, she also enjoyed her membership at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Mrs. Shumans was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Leroy Shumans; parents, William Briley and Addie Cowart Hamm; daughter-in-law, Judy Shumans; grandson, David Kyle Shumans; sisters, Gertrude Miles, Kathleen Bright, Essie Mae Floyd, and Angie Lee Graham; brothers, Warnell (Sam) Hamm, James Lester Hamm, Eugene (Jab) Hamm, Vernon (Bud) Hamm, Charles Felton Hamm, and John Edward Hamm.
Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Lula Mae Perry (Wayne) of Hazlehurst; son, Dr. David Leroy Shumans of Graham; grandchildren, Jennifer
Perry of Atlanta and Grant Parker Shumans of Graham; sister, Janelle Strickland of Graham; sister-in-law, Vicki Vickers (Gavin) of Alma; as well as several nieces and nephews.
