Obituary

Rev. Gary Eugene Robert, age 70, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 5, 2023.

Rev. Roberts was born in Hazlehurst on December 5, 1952, to the late William Austin Roberts and Vera Hand Roberts. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dr. Don Roberts, and sister-in-law, Lorna Roberts.

Words from his son Brett Roberts;

"My Dad peacefully made his transition to heaven on May 5th, 2023, with his beloved wife Janet by his side. My Dad grew up on a farm with a truly wonderful family in Roper Ga. He enjoyed fixing things, building things, tools, and tinkering. A self-taught “master craftsman”. Most of his life he carried the smell of sawdust and fresh cut wood. He perfected the art of cooking steak. He liked good sound equipment. He enjoyed fishing on the farm and teaching others to fish. He loved his wife Janet and was with her until the end. He loved being a dad, Pop Pops, and Papa to many. His greatness could be found in his great love for His family. He loved, served, and gave with no strings attached. He put others ahead of himself. He was always looking for ways to help people. He embraced those who were searching for belonging. He made a home for those longing for faith & family. He was unafraid to accept the outcast. He was a man of mercy. He wasn’t critical or cruel but forgiving, understanding, kind and compassionate. A true gentle giant. He was an ordained minister who loved to encourage believers with a fresh word. Although he faithfully ministered in local churches and ministries, God opened the door for him to travel to South Africa years ago on a life-changing mission trip. He had the gift of showing up. That was his superpower. He never needed or wanted the flashy lights or stage. He didn’t care if he got the credit for something that he did. He was a hidden hero. He didn’t back away from the hard cases. He did the jobs others refused to do. And he did them all well. He allowed God to continue to teach him and make adjustments in his life. He never stopped learning. He had personal dreams and goals, but he was willing to put those on hold to help those he loved to live their dreams. Many times, he gave his last dollar to bless someone else. He was a Spirit-Filled/Word-Filled believer. He believed in, lived, and shared the good news of God’s lavish love and grace. He was a member and leader of Inspire Church where he faithfully served at my side. A man who loved Jesus and knew that Jesus loved him. Until his last day on this earth, he had the Word of God in his heart and on his lips. He didn’t strive to be great for the sake of greatness. He wasn’t interested in making a name for Himself. He simply lived out his faith in everyday life and never stopped relentless loving and helping people. He was gentle and humble of heart like the One whom He followed. He always showed up. He could always be counted on. The older he got, the more his love grew. He built many things for others. Now he is enjoying what His Heavenly Father built and prepared just for him. He was the best of the best and we can’t help but be happy for him and all that He is enjoying now."

He is survived by his wife Janet Roberts, sons, Rev. Brett Roberts (Kim), LaDon Holmes, Samuel Smith (Sheena), daughters, Natasha Burnette (Greg), Endia Smith, Sara Fuller, sister, Cheryl Roberts Lovett (Greg), grandchildren, Felicity Greene, Jade Burnette, Jalen Overstreet, Eden Roberts, Bryce Fuller, Israel Smith, Llah Ellis, Evangeline Roberts, Elias Smith, Gate Burnette, Saint Smith, E’yari Smith, Jamie Elaoise Roberts, Sander Smith, Gace Burnette, Hannah Evans, Isserica Grant, Dominic Layport, great grandchild, Brittan Bennett.
