Mr. Troy Dewain Phillips, age 63, of Hazlehurst, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at Jeff Davis Hospital.
He was born on October 20, 1961, in Baxley to the late Norvell Phillips and Dorothy Harrell Phillips. A native and lifelong resident of Hazlehurst, he was a talented cabinet maker by trade, known for crafting beautiful custom pieces and for his exceptional ability to carve and build anything out of wood. His skill and creativity were matched only by his love of the outdoors and his deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
Troy had a passion for collecting — especially old cars, guns, and knives — and he was a devoted fan of Gunsmoke and classic John Wayne westerns. Affectionately known to his family as the “Chicken Man,” he had a special love for raising chickens and could often be found tending to them or working happily in his yard. He will be missed by his family and friends who loved him dearly.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Teresa Smith; and his brother, Thomas Ussery.
Troy’s family includes his brother, Kenneth Ussery of Hazlehurst; his sisters, Geneva Wilson of Macon, and Nannie Purvis (Gary) of Hazlehurst; his grandchildren, Roy “Crum” Hughes, Chris, Trea, Taylor, and Skyy Hughes; his great-grandchildren, Ana, Addison, Aurora, Lillie, Alyvia, and Caelum Hughes; several special friends, including Danny and Kathy Patton, Mather Davis and Pete Mosely, Sandra Brauda and her granddaughter, Mallory Kauger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
No services will be held at this time.
Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home and the Phillips family are in charge of all arrangements.
