Wilma Jean Abernathy Obituary

Mrs. Wilma Jean Wright Abernathy, age 88, of Hazlehurst, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Lakeview Retirement Center in Baxley.

Wilma was born on July 31, 1936, in Holtville, California. A devoted Christian and long-time member of the Assemblies of God, Wilma lived her life with grace, love, and purpose. Whether through her work in children’s church, leading moms’ groups, or simply humming a favorite hymn, Wilma brought comfort and inspiration to those around her.

She retired from her career as an AT&T operator but never stopped giving of herself. For over a decade, she served as a helper at Hilmar Elementary School, nurturing and supporting children with the same warmth she brought to every part of her life. She was a glorious singer, often found humming gospel hymns that reflected the joy and peace she carried in her heart. Wilma had a deep love for flower gardens, fresh tomatoes, a good cup of coffee, and above all—Jesus.

She is preceded in death by her parents, O.H. Davis and Ellen Elizabeth Davis; her first husband of 50 years, Robert E.L. Wright; her second husband, Dr. John Abernathy; and her sisters, Joann Kohen, Flodie Copp, Carol Abernathy.

Wilma’s family includes her children, Deborah and Jerry Toler of Hazelhurst, Robert and Kim Wright of Hilmar, CA, and Craig and Marcy Wright of Hughson, CA; her brother, Tommy Davis and wife Odelphia; her step-children, Nonnie Abernathy of Thurmond, NC, Tamera and Darryl Wilson of Thurmond, NC, Zishia and the late Daniel Saldano of Jonesville, NC, John and Jamie Abernathy of Ennice, NC, and Serena Childress of State Road, NC; her sister in laws, Josie Davis and husband Randy of Rouzerville, PA, and Viola Patterson of GA; 36 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, and 8 great great-grandchildren. Jesus loves the little children, and so did she.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 1:00 P.M. at Parkway Baptist Church, 195 Graham Baptist Church Rd Baxley, GA. She will then be sent to her final resting place in California for a second service and be buried with her late husband, Bob, at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Flowers may be sent to the church, or monetary donations can be made in Wilma’s memory to: The Remarkable Life Foundation 101 W Renner Rd Suite 420 Richardson, TX 75082.
